Gallery: Macro & Close-upPosted April 17, 20154,385 views10 comments

This photo was taken in 2009 at the Butterfly Place in Westford, MA.  Jim Deasy organized a group of NPN members to visit and it is a great place to capture photos of these beautiful insects! This remains one of my better macro shots and since it wasn't in my personal gallery, I thought I would post it again and save it to my gallery.

Details;

  • Canon 50D with EF 100USM Macro
  • f/2.8 @ 1/60th, ISO 400
  • Bogen tripd/RRS ball head
  • full frame minus a crop off the left side

Hi Jim,

This is very nice.  At f2.8, you were lined up perfectly.  The details of the eye, body, and wings are excellentdevil..........Jim

Jim, the facility opened early for the NPN group and it was cool inside so the butterflies were not active.  I had taken this shot at several different angles and apertures and liked this one the best.  Because they were rather motionless, it allowed me to finely tune my tripod placement to get everything lined up.

BTW, this is all natural light - the structure has a translucent roof which produces ideal light for photography.

Beauty, JIm. Well composed for the pretty BF and the flowers. The image has nice color and an appealing softness except for the BF's head, forewing, and body, which are good and sharp.

Excellent plane of focus management and detail in the butterfly. I also like the diagonal composition. I am jealous of your shooting conditions. Beautiful butterfly image!

The large view looks very nice Jim, great details across the wings.

Amazing DOF @ F/2.8, it has created a nice soft BG.. Butterfly houses are tough.

Flower perch, colors, and comp R excellentdevil

Albert and Howard, thanks!  I have some other shots from this outing I will post this weekend, though this one IMO was my the best of the day.
