Cape Buffalo

Here's another shot from our South Africa tour last year.  This was taken from our safari vehicle in Addo Elephant National Park zoomed out as far as I could (effective of 225mm).  I then cropped in a little bit to get to this point.  I like it for the eye contact and the texture of the horns.

This really has to be opened and viewed int he larger version to experience its impact.  I agree the texture is its great strength.  Your choice of f8 and focal point gave excellent detail tip of nose to horns.  Perfect.  I find your choice of framing interesting and effective, with depth of field control generating a strong portrait feel when viewed large.

Love the texture on the horns. I also like the symmetry formed by the horns. Very nice.

Great portrait-with-supporting-elements, Nate! Not sure that's the best description, but if this is a portrait, it's got a lot more interest than a simpler comp would have had I think. I like those "buffalo face and horns" shots where that's about all there is to the frame, but the textures in the body, background vegetation, and overall comp REALLY works for me on this one. That's some good looking IQ from that lens as well!
