Barn Owls

Hi everyone! Here's another from our trip to the coast.

These Barn Owls (mating pair) were taking a nap while roosting in the rafters of a dairy barn. It was my first sighting of wild barn owls, so I was pretty excited to just see them, but it was a bonus to be able to photograph them! While it would've been cool to get a picture of them awake and alert, I think it was nice to get an image of them sleeping peacefully.

I'm wondering whether you guys like the color version or the B&W version below better? Please let me know what you think!

Thank y'all for lookin'! :wavey:

Nikon D7100
Nikkor AF-S 300mm f/2.8G IF-ED VR
ISO 1000
1/13sec @ f/7.1
Mounted on Feisol Tripod and ballhead
Photographed using Live View for accurate focus and to eliminate mirror vibration

Hi Jenaya,

I prefer the color version as it appears warm and cozy. I also like the composition and the diagonals of the beams. You are lucky to have seen these guys as they are becoming less common. Well done :toast: .................Jim

A terrific image as posted. The large color version has wonderful depth and make the image three dimensional and very natural and realistic.

Excellent work at such a low shutter speed.

Very cool, Jenaya.. I prefer the color version largely because it seems to capture the textures in the wood better and for me this image is as much about the barn as the owls. Excellent dof to get the whole area in crisp focus.

I like the likes in the bran Jenaya. I also like your subjects and like them positioned in the top left...however, I am struggling a little with the lower right part of the frame. It feels a little unbalanced to me...maybe that is just me....but any chance you thought about a vertical 4x5? I would crop it almost exactly in half discarding the right side of course  Still, nicely seen and love the lines.
