Through the Mist

Hi everyone! This picture was taken in British Columbia with my dad and my sister and another photographer we were out with. We were photographing wood ducks and green winged teals at dawn when I spotted these geese flying through the mist across the lake.

I waited for the geese to come into the open so you could see them a bit better and then I got this shot. We had to crop a little bit off the top to get rid of some power lines :frown: but otherwise this is full frame.

Please look at the larger picture and tell me if you think I could make it better! I hope you like it!

*** Note from dad: my new system is stripping the exif out of my web files so I don't have the techs available for Josiah for this one...will check the original when I'm able and will have him add that info.

I like this Josiah. I have a few similar shots from Yellowstone with Canada Geese and Sandhill Cranes small in the frame with the surrounding environment. Nice capture.

I like the composition and idea behind the shot, but really think some brightening of the fog would improve it considerably. Try it, if you don't like the result, don't use it.

I love the fog and the position of the birds - but I'd brighten this up a half stop.

I really like your composition, Josiah, and it's great to see the geese in such great detail through the fog. Not being there to compare what you saw, it's hard to judge, but I would normally expect to see this just a little brighter. It's a little touchy handling the brightness of shots like this because you have to be careful not to increase the contrast to much and lose the foggy feeling. I try to let my memory be my guide in making adjustments like that.

There is a great moody feel to this image Josiah, I like it a lot. But I agree about lightening it a touch to see if it improves the IQ any. Well done!

Hi Josiah! I guess you already know how much I like this one! I can't believe you spotted these guys from this distance in the low morning light and pulled off this comp and timing! Really, really well-done. This image has such an artistic feel to it.

All: I can't argue with this looking/feeling a bit dark, but I think it's pretty accurate to the moment captured. The geese (and mist) are in front of a very dark forest in shadow. If you look at the brightness and tones on the geese themselves, irrespective of the mist and surroundings, I think they look about right for their actual coloration in that setting. HOWEVER, with this consistent feedback I will take another run at this one with Josiah. I processed it on the road on the laptop, and I don't have a lot of confidence in the veracity of my LCD screen on that system (but I did check it on my phone and our main system before Josiah posted it and thought it looked about right).

Thank you everyone for commenting on this picture and suggesting I lighten it. My dad and I are going to try and brighten it up a little bit tonight. Thanks again!
