Vantage Point

This subadult lioness was the boldest among her four siblings. She was also the most active. While her family slept for the entire day next to the massive buffalo that they had killed, this young girl walked around scanning the place for more action. These small abandoned ant hills that are covered with vegetation are one of the best vantage points for predators like Lions and Cheetahs.

We spent a lot of time with this big pride of lions which lazed around in the grasslands all day before it started raining.

Where: Maasai Mara, Kenya
When: August 2014
Equip: Canon 5D Mark III and Canon 500 f4
Info: f8 and 1/60 at 1000 ISO

Love the way lioness is perched on the ant hill, makes a great vantage point. Also love the tension between the tree and the ant hill. In a perfect world, I would have preferred the tree to the farther left.

Epic comes to mind when I look at this. It screams "Africa". This really conveys what Africa is all about. Wonderful capture.

Hi Sachin,

This one is really nice! The positioning and pose of the lion couldn't be better, and I really like the DoF (with the lion so sharply in focus and the background gently fading away). I have to admit that the first time I opened the shot my eye was drawn very quickly to that dominant tree in the background (not long after glancing at the main subject), so in that regard it may be functioning a BIT as a distraction. Will be interesting to hear if anyone else reacts to it the same way...

Cool moment - and very well captured - congrats...

Beautiful "animal in its environment" image. I also think you perfectly portrared her more alert nature. I wouldn't change a thing about this shot. Wonderful!
