White Wolf

Had a nice encounter with the Canyon Pack during a winter photo tour that I led in Yellowstone earlier this month. This is the white alpha female from that pack. At 10 years old, she is one of the oldest known wolves in the park.

Techs:
Nikon D300s
2 vertical frames stitched for added "breathing room" around the wolf
300mm + 1.4x TC

One of the best wolf images I've seen in a long time. Just stunning.

Absolutely top shelf, Zack! Love the pensive moment, wonderful eye, relaxed posture, great setting, natural comp...the list of "what's to like" goes on for a while on this one! Was going to comment about it feeling a little reddish but realized my monitor was still in Adobe 98 mode, switched back to sRGB and it looks great, although perhaps lacking a bit in saturation. I truly dislike unnaturally saturated images, but the spruce beside the wolf does seem a bit lacking in colour. Just a thought. Good move on the composite for extra space.

Great shot Zack, I love the body pose and the visible color in the eye. Makes me look forward to getting out there again in May even more. I agree with John that too much saturation is all too common and not a good thing, but the colors in this seem like they could be improved upon.

Beautiful Zack. Fantastic color and handling of the stark whites in this.

Nice to see my favorite wolf in such detail. I like that you managed to get this great look at her, including the eye, despite the lowered head.

Wonderful shot Zack! She looks just like her mother did 10 years ago. I love the way you captured her in the snow, it really captures the essence of winter in Yellowstone.

Hi Zack,

I really like this shot - exactly as posted. I often argue for "backing off" a little and capturing more of the environment, but in this case I love the intimacy of this shot, which I think the close framing helps to convey. And...I quite like the muted colours as presented...

Very well done - and thanks for sharing this special moment...
