Departure

The landscape is pretty bland near where I live and the winters are quite long, very cold and bleak, with short hours of daylight, making photography a challenge at times. I often find myself wishing I was back in Ontario or just about anywhere else for that matter. Lately though, I've decided that rather than head out of town every time I have some days off I would stick around and challenge myself, embrace the elements and blandness, and try my hand at some minimalist compositions, a style of art that I am increasingly growing quite fond of.

Still, it would be nice to be on that plane and heading for a more hospitable and scenic location.

Appreciate your comments.

Carey, I think this works well as a minimalist view. There's a nice balance between the telephone pole and the contrail plus enough texture in the land and clouds to gently let them play a good supporting role. I do think that you could improve this view by moving further to the left. That would move the pole closer to the right edge and separate it further from the contrail while keeping that nice cloud wave in the sky on the right. It also might get the shadow of the pole coming in from the left corner.

PS, for me one of the major challenges in photography is creating strong images locally. I think that's considerably more of a challenge than going to someplace exotic.

Black and white helps with this image. Even though it appears bland to you, there's lots of texture in the snow and I like the edge of the clouds in the right side of the frame....................................Jim

Nice! What at first glance seems to be a random collection of elements all come together as a vary interesting whole. This one really captured my imagination.
