Fall Towpath

I avoid placing important parts of an image on a 1/3 junction for two main reasons; I want the sense of stability that comes with a centered subject or I'm trying to set up a strong dynamic balance, which often means having significant subjects near the edges of the frame. For this view of fall colors along the C&O Canal Towpath at the Great Falls section of the C&O Canal National Park, I did some of both, with the arching trees and their reflections centered vertically and nearly horizontally, but the towpath very much off to the side (except for it's vanishing point being nearly dead center). (5D3, 70-200 f2.8 @ 125mm, 1/8s, f/10, iso 400, tripod, polarizer, and cable release)

Throw out the rule of thirds... this works beautifully. Great depth to the image.

Super image, Mark !! I love the perspective, that wonderful circling of the branches and their reflections, and the overall textures with the smooth water and the sprinkling of live and fallen leaves. A very beautiful effect !!

Love this composition with all the circular motion. It's a very inviting fall scene and your eye goes along the path and back down the river, or vice versa. Great use of the reflections.
