I was out shooting a Mandarin Duck who was in an area of spotty shade. As I waited for the sunlight to move and give me a better exposure, I notice how the light played and these reeds (I do not know what they are). My wife has been teaching me to look for other images besides birds so I did and this is the result.

Canon 7D with EF 70-200 f/2.8L Mark ii at 105mm
ISO 250
f / 5.6 at 1/750

Comments and suggestions are appreciated

Lovely play of light on the reeds and a nice colour combination, Harry. I like the simplicity of the composition, though I could wish to see just a little more of the reeds rising from their base. Nice image !!

Harry: Well seen and nicely composed and captured. I enjoy these grasses but rarely find them in a spot with a good BG and/or still enough to shoot successfully. Looks like you did everything right. Your wife is right of course, one wouldn't want his photography to be completely for the birds  . Keep looking down and hope you visit here more often.>=))>

Looks a bit like Fountain Grass (Pennisetum ruppelii), although it prefers an arid climate. Your Orange County Agent could probably identify it for sure. Nice detail. I would like to have seen more of the grass and less of the lake.

I think your wife is good for your photography.

Love the play of the dappled light in the grasses! The background sets the scene but is a little too bright, and competitive, with the subject.
The hunter's eye for birds, the muse's eye for (almost) everything else.
