Santa Cruz Island

by Harley Goldman

Gallery: LandscapePosted February 9, 2015201 views11 comments
This is Santa Cruz island, off the coast of Santa Barbara and part of the Channel islands, poking through the clouds as a storm slowly cleared Sunday morning.

Please have a look at the large version. The small one does not show well.

Nikon D810, 70-200mm

I agree - large image is a must. Although I think that B&W works well, I wonder how the color version would look? If what I imagine is right - bright blue blots on a darker grayish ocean - that would work too. Although perhaps the island would not be as distinct ? Just wondering.

That's a lot of sky, but a good sky. I'm liking it!

lovely image, harley - one that tickles my eye. lovely tones and sense of space and distance. it might be the way I woke up this morning but it might need a slight CW rotation?

Fits your Wide Open Spaces portfolio very well! I especially like how it takes some time before the mountains in the background grab your attention. If they had been more in-your-face, the photo would have had a less mysterious feeling to it.

Harley, Looking at the large version really does make a difference here and I like it very much. I think this one needs to be seen really large!

happy to find on this site similar images.
Not cried tones, not special effects, but a serene and poetic scene, a soft but rich transitions/tone management...
I like it much.
All the best,

Hi Harley,

There is something about this image that draws you in. The depth created by all the layers is fantastic, and the island is perfectly placed in the frame.

Love this one from you Harley, and the large version is great.

This is a great collection of layers, Harley, with that hint of island adding some fine depth. Well seen.

This is one for your big sky series portfolio. I love the varied tonal layers, and B&W suits this nicely. Well done, sir!

I'm really enjoying your sense of scale, Harley. Love the big sky look of your recent images and this is no exception. Real nice.

Nice shot man. Love the simplicity here. I might consider a 16:9 crop (off the top)?
