Storm's Edge

During last week's snow storm, that started here gently and moved into New England with a big bang, I went out to try and capture the falling snow using the Patuxent River as the backdrop. If you look closely here, you can see some streaks due to the falling snow, but they're subtle enough that I don't see them as contributing much to the image. (I do have shots that show the falling snow better, but I don't like the compositions as well.) (5D3, 24-70 f2.8 @ 24mm, f/10, 1/10s, iso 100, tripod and cable release)

I agree, the snow is hard to spot except at the very bottom of the image, but I think it works well regardless - light and composition are quite pleasing!

Not really a "falling snow" picture, but a very pleasing river winterscape! Appropriately named.

Glad you got to this spot while there was still snow on those trees - can be a very barren view without it. The periphery of the image looks fine, but the large area of water in the middle seems devoid of much interest for me. Some streaking cascades would be great, and you included them where they existed. Too big of a void for me considering the space in the image. There is a still area at the far end with some nice reflections that I bet would make some good abstracts inthe future. :toast:

Hi Mark,

This image is a nice capture of this area, and I like the how you have decided to frame the river with the moving water and rocks on the left and the larger rock wall on the right. You created lots of depth here as well that works for me.

This is an interesting image , Mark. I like the dreariness on display here, which I'm sure was the mood of the day. This may well be an image that could work real well as a b/w. I agree with Harry about the reflective part of this run could make some cool images. :wavey:

Interesting color in the water and certainly captures the weight of the storm edge. The fallen tree from the right could be classified as distracting, but I often like some yin and yang dissonance. The stress in the image can keep the eye exploring!

I sure wish we'd get some snow in our Sierra! Nice mood to this, Mark. I like the soft color and the nice detail in the water.

Yeah, I see the streaks, but agree that there are not enough for them to make a statement here. This is however, a nice comp, and scene, that is much better viewed large.

Mark, I like the comp you came up with here for this winter scene and agree it looks much better in the large version. It certainly has that cold wintry mood. I see the streaks too but agree with you that as fine as they are not adding much. It works fine without them anyways.
