Desert Drifters

I have had a long-term portfolio idea I named "Wide Open Spaces". I have always been drawn to scenes in wide open country and they are generally very simple images. This is one of those. Not much to it really, but to me it conveys the feel of Death Valley and the huge space there.

I have found capturing images for this portfolio has been far more difficult than I expected when I conceived it.

Nikon D810, 70-200mm

Comments, suggestions and critiques always welcome.

This works for me, Harley. I also love wide open spaces, and I think that the best way of conveying what they are all about is precisely this one - an uninterrupted view with non-intrusive details in the distance. In this case I also think that B&W works better than color would.

This certainly works for me, Harley. I love the simplicity, and as Albert says, "...an uninterrupted view with non-intrusive details in the distance". The clouds and the buttes a re nicely positioned, and the tones look great. Nicely done!

As a black and white image, the amount of gray in the lower half probably decreases the intended drama substantially. I like the concept, but could definitely see pushing the development to match the vision.

The large version really conveys the wide open space feeling. My only nit is that I might crop a bit from the left I think. Interesting idea for a portfolio!

This is a wonderful image Harley. A great composition. A simple elegant work. It's power comes from understating. I wouldn't add more contrast to it.

Hi Harley,

The wide open space is conveyed wonderfully in this B&W. The elements of the image are well arranged, and they provide a very nice balance. The tones work great for an more elegant image than dramatic.

Well seen and captured

Engaging photo. Only thing is not quite sure what to focus my eyes on, they seem to go up and down. Perhaps simplify by removing or toning down one element. It seems to have great potential for a minimalist shot.

Love the simplicity of your composition, Harley. In fact, I almost wish the cloud in the upper left hand corner was absent to even further simplify your composition. But this works very well to further your portfolio idea of open spaces. Love it.

Harley, this is fantastic! I am in agreement with all the postive comments made previously. This image really takes me to the desert. The mood conveyed is extraordinary.
