Varied Thrush

Before moving to the northern sierra foothills a few years ago, I had seen maybe two of these birds in my life. I guess this is their preferred habitat, because we get them every year. They are often mixed in with flocks of robins as they march through our forest. A few weeks ago 3-4 seemed to have taken up residence near our home. Difficult to photograph as they are quite skittish. I used my portable blind for this one.

D800e, 300f4, 1.4tc, 1/100, f6.3, ISO 1250, tripod.

Comments and criticism are very much appreciated.

Gorgeous bird - I like the detail on the perch as well (likely a direct result of the D800!)

Never seen one of these Jim, you captured it well. Super sharp and sweet head turn. I think I'm seeing some noise in the BG, maybe run some NR on it. Very nice!

Thanks everyone for your comments. Steve, yes there is some noise visible, especially on the larger photo. I will definitely fix this when I go to print it.Thanks for pointing it out.

Perfect. I like the soft light and the multi-colored pastel background. Excellent eye contact and detail. The stump work here as a perch. One of my favorite species. Thanks for posting, Dave
