Just a quick photo from our quickfire family trip to the Kruger National Park last weekend. A Spotted Hyaena in the rain. How'd I get the low angle? Clever vehicle positioning! Yes, it was standing on a gravel road...

Techs:
Nikon D3s
Nikkor 500mm f4 VR-II
f5.6 | 1/320 SS | ISO-220

Way cool, Morkel...love the mood and tonality here and the pose perfectly fits the feel of the scene. The great look the Hyena is giving you and your capturing its paw coming forward are icing on the cake. I guess that makes the rain drops the yummy sugar sprinkles on top of the icing. However you describe it, this is a striking and memorable image.

Hi Morkel,

I'm a little torn on this one. I like several things - the low head and almost "purposeful" look and pose of the hyena, its positioning in the frame works well, and the subject certainly stands out! On the "not sure how I feel" side, the bright specular lights in the upper right side of the frame yanked my eye some, and I'm not fully sure if the rain adds or detracts from the image (mainly because without reading the description it's not clear it's rain - I though it might be image noise...thought you were perhaps using (and pushing) Tri-X film! And with the exception of the bright portions near the top right, the image is pretty flat tonally - which makes me wonder if going B&W works (but you know me, won't say this definitively without seeing the original colour version!!).

Hey - this was shot with MORE than a 100mm lens - what gives?!!

Cheers...

Nice low angle and the B&W treatment works real well. I wish that the rain stood out more (slower SS allowing for streaks?) To me it looks more like dust or just a grainy image - though the larger version mitigates that problem quite a bit and I imagine the original file looks much better than this compressed shot

This has a lot of impact for me. I do not like hyenas at all; they give me the heebie-jeebies! I'll take a brown bear any day.
I like this. The tones in this work well with the subject's stance and its environment.

Cool image Morkel. There is something about it that is evocative, maybe the mood of the environment or maybe reputation of hyenas. It is a touch flat tonally, but the lowered head, raised paw, low POV and eye-contact are all powerful elements. Thanks for sharing.
