December 24, 2014 at San Joaquin Wildlife Sancturary in Irvine, California.

Nikon D4 Nikkor 600mm 1.4TC 850mm White Balance Auto RAW ISO250 1/2500 f/8 Processed in Lightroom, PhotoshopCC2014, NIK and TK. While the reds still look very bright, the color of the bird as posted is far less than the initial color after taking the shot. This bird not necessarily the species, is naturally very vivid.m Your comments are greatly appreciated. :toast:

Its sooo easy to blow the reds on these birds -- but this is gorgeous -- maintaining detail in the red and the blacks can be a challenge -- love the pose and colors -- great jbb

Nice photo, Patrick. Lovely bird with that beautiful red coloration. You held both the detail and colors real well considering what you had on there for glass. Hope you were using a tripod. A nice perch appropriate for the season and who can complain about that BG. Assume you did some cropping, too based on the image size here. Some parts of the bird look like starting to soften in the larger version. Nevertheless, you really got right out there. Well done.

As Scott noted, it's very easy to blow the reds in this species. You managed the exposure very well. There's a loss of detail in the eyebrow, noticeably in the larger version, but that's a tiny nit on a very nice photo. Far superior to any of my shots of this species.

Patrick: wonderful pose, perch and background. The simplicity of the scene with the bird being the sole object of attention reminds me of the old cliche that "less is more". Congrats, Richard

I think you're being a little hard on yourself here Patrick. I think the reds look fine. Nice work with the processing and comp

Hi Patrick
The red on the head, cheeks and throat looks so wonderfully luminous - it's hard to beat!
If I may make some suggestions, I would relieve the red of the breast, just a little and lighten the shadow regions of the foliage.
I would go for a yet lighter blue background.and suppress the the darker graduated tone of the upper BG - as such it lends a rather oppressive touch that diminishes the impact of this otherwise excellent image of the bird. Best wishes for the New Year.
