Here's my final posting on this rather odd big buck at our nature preserve. No more planned from this series. But might get something interesting at a later time. Big storm due in CA on Thurs so probably won't get out again this week. It was nice to get this guy all alone and in the open so I could get a good look at him. I had to use my TE and a real high ISO to get the image but it looks pretty good unless you really zoom in on it. I cropped this by about 25% mostly to get rid of distracting FG veg and some off the left side for balance. After that I added some warmth and saturation to get the green grass looking as it does right now. I also added some contrast and clarity. That all. Comments and critiques are welcome.

Tech Info

Canon EOS 60D with EF 70-200mm f/4 and 1.4 TE = 280mm
1/500th at f/5.6 and ISO 5000
tripod
Lightroom 5

Peter, IMHO you saved the best photo of this buck until last! This photo shows the buck the best you have posted of him. Also, it is a good photo over all, except I do detect a slight magenta cast. Could be my monitor. I like how the tree frames him, giving some separation from the BG. The other deer add to the overall image, without detracting from the main subject. I think you could crop this as a vertical and just show the buck, but I like it as it is. Thanks for sharing this series.

Nice capture that offers a better look at those antlers. They are so massive. Might want to see if you can find them after they are shed. Would be quite a find.

Holy smokes, Peter! Been kept away from NPN for a few weeks and look what I've been missing! Surely your most impressive buck of all, and a great, natural image of him to boot. LOVE the three horizontal layers, the framing of the tree, and the look you captured...a cross between alert and pensive, just right for the overall mood and feel of the frame IMO. Does in the background are icing on the cake.

Honestly I'd sneak in and put a tracking device on this guy and follow him all winter until those antlers dropped!

Hi Peter,

The larger version shows the abnormal antlers well. And quite the rack!

Cheers...
