North Rim Dapple

This is from this September. Hurricane Norbert was making it's way up from Mexico and I thought I might catch some great storm light at the North Rim. Things like this rarely work out for me. Spent the night camped in a deluge of rain and hoped things would break by daylight. It was an awesome morning, no people, and crazy storms passing through.

I would appreciate your input on this image. Thanks for the kind comments on my last image.

Way better large

Crazy cool light you had here and the usual nice B & W PP.
The swirls in the canyon are awesome.....

You really had some amazing light there, Gary, well worth the rainy camp. Your typically masterful B+W conversion really makes this sing. I'd try and eliminate/darken that one tiny bit of blown out cloud that I only noticed on the larger version so maybe it actually is not a problem.
Kudos!

I really like the sky in this Gary as well as your conversion. The dappled light throughout the image is beautiful as is the tonal range. I've got no suggestions. I like this a lot.

With the wonderful light and shadows this probably looks pretty dang beautiful in color but your B&W conversion is awesome. A very strong image indeed. :toast:

Really nice shot with the dappled sun areas. My only thought might be to increase the distant mid tone contrast, though it looks pretty good as is. Tru a selective Clarity in crease in ACR if you use that. Hope to see this canyon some day. :toast:

Beautiful mixed light and scene. Excellent. I might be tempted to pull in the black point a little bit to pop the contrast just a touch, but very much just a personal thing. Looks beautiful as is.

First, I love the sense of movement created by the shadowing clouds. It is a wonderful eye feast of an image, and the conversion is very good. Second, I think it would be improved a good bit by lightening the mid-tones and pulling the black point in about 8% (around 20 on the levels scale). I wouldn't worry about minor blown whites; the rules are different for b/w. Pure white is just the end of the dynamic range. :toast:

Gary: I confess that I don't see and conceptualize B&W comps like this but you sure do. Marvelous scene. I made my one and only trip to the north rim late in the season in 2012. I too had the whole place to myself and if I never spend another day on the south rim of the canyon it would be OK with me. You've helped convince me that my desire to return to the north rim is well founded. Most excellent. >=))>

A great view, Gary, especially with all of the clouds and touches of light in the canyon!

Gary, your B&W work is really moving forward. I really like this. If you do pull in the black point, don't do much because I'm afraid the lower left corner will be too dark. Just a thought: If you have TK's Masks, try using a narrow mids mask to boost the contrast in the canyon just a wee bit. If needed paint the mask with black so that the lower left corner is not affected. I do like the composition and the overall dynamic range, so the tweak I mentioned is really personal preference.

Way better large indeed Gary!! This is a grand vista, and the B&W conversion shows off the graphic nature of this canyon wonderfully. I just enjoy the tones so much, and a job well done.

Also, I enjoy reading all the suggestions from the seasoned photographers in this forum. They help to improve my B&W conversion, and your work moves me to advance my vision B&W work Gary.
