Western Sandpiper

November 23, 2014 in Mission Beach, California While at the edge of the berm created by high tide, I was photographing surfers when these fellows happened by. After following them as the gamboled up the beach, I got a few shots.

I would have liked to get on the sand for a "Hans low-profile" shot, but the water came to the edge of the berm, and I was set enough from the waist down after being hit by errant high tide waves already.

Nikon D4 Nikkor 600mm ISO200 1/1000 f/9 RAW White Balance Auto Taken on a Wimberley gimbal with a tripod. Processed in Lightroom, NIK and PhotoshopCC2014.

Patrick: really pretty shot with techs being spot on. I like the way the bubbles on the beach break up the sand and how the foam line sets off the bird. Only thing I might suggest is to tone down a few of the specula highlights nearest the bird's beak and head. Richard

Nice one Patrick, with great reflection on the bill and eye light ! Shows the bird exactly as we see them , and staying dry and save your equipment is probably as wise  . Looks like 'your' version of 'our' Sanderling. Well done ! , Hans

Nice capture Patrick ! I like the shadow and the sparkles on the wave, but I'd be tempted to clone out the circular patterns above the forehead. As Hans said, I think this cute little one is a Sanderling instead of a Western Sandpiper ( Western Sp has thinner, slightly longer and drooped bill ). :toast:

Very nice, Patrick. Excellent exposure, crisp details and I like the complimentary colors of the background.
