Stick and Stone

This is an appealing microcosm taken on the slopes of one of the many large mesas in the eastern section of Zion, the most famous of course being Checkerboard Mesa. This one particular area, which for unknown reasons I had not spent much time in the past, I perused more thoroughly this year, and came away with many good compositions.

Jim, I've been enjoying your Zion series very much. I like this one, too. The textures are excellent, as is the color. I do find my eye wanting a tad more space between the rock and the lower edge, though. The branch and stone make a compelling combination.

Very nice, intriguing composition. Reminds me of this Dykinga image: http://www.dykinga.com/Arizona/i-qZfCsS4/A

What's not to like, Jim. These little intimate scenes are much harder to find and even hard to photograph well in comparison to the plethora of grand landscapes in Zion. You knocked this one out of the park. I'm a huge fan of your Zion work and I admit that I frequently peruse your galleries prior to a trip to jack up my inspiration level. :toast:

This is neat, Jim. The angled ridges in the background work very well and your subject looks like the big rock is held in place by that little stick.

Wow! Bret, that is quite extraordinary and humbling praise coming from anybody, let alone a well-known and respected professional southwestern landscape photographer such as yourself. Thank you so much!

Very nice, Jim, Another great intimate look at Zion. I like the fact that the "stone" is a lighter color that contrasts nicely with the sandstone. Personally, I think I'd like this even better without the stick, but then the title would not be nearly as cute.

This is really well done, Jim. I love a good intimate study and this one works for me. Great colors and the mix of tones and comp works very well.

Hi Jim,

The colors and textures are wonderful, and the framing of this image is about perfect with those lines leading the viewer. I truly enjoy the glowing light emanating from this capture, and just great work!!
