Rufous-winged Antshrike

Canon 1D-X, 300mm x 2.0TC, handheld
f5.6, 1/400, ISO12800

A fairly uncommon bird in the Pantanal, this fellow was deep in the gallery forest alongside one of the shallow lakes. There was very little light.

40% of full frame. Selective sharpening to bird. Noise reduction to background. This is about as far as I find I can push the ISO on the 1D-X. There is some noise in the bird. At shutter speeds slower than 1/400 (and higher ISOs) there was motion blur from the bird's panting.

C & C, please. Thanks for looking.

This is a nice bird, well captured.
I'm amazed with the ISO 12800. I suffer from using 400 on my 7D... :)

Jim I am always amazed at the call these Ant shrikes have, big call for a little one. Think considering the conditions and handheld you have done very well, love the raised crest.

Back in the film days, this photo would not have been even close to possible.

Sweet portrait considering the conditions Jim :toast:

I like the singing pose and comp. It's a bit soft, I think some fill flash would have been the way to go here. But a good result given the iso that you used. :toast:
