Ensnared Sandhill

near Corkscrew Swamp, Naples, Florida

This unfortunate Sandhill had a torn aluminum can stuck on his upper bill. He seemed to be eating and preening adequately, but when he got closer, I could see some fresh blood on his bill. He tried repeatedly and unsuccessfully to dislodge it.

One of many sickening examples of human waste endangering Wildlife and the environment.

This makes me sick and angry! Was there anyway to help the poor creature?

BTW, you've been missed. Welcome back!

Thanks! I've been drowning almost since we got back from Africa in June. Sick 93-yr-old mother with progressing Alzheimers here in CA, sick 94 yr-old father in Florida. Plus, we just bought a sweet home overlooking the southern Oregon coast, and will be fixing up and selling the CA house over the next 18-24 mo. I have hardly picked up my camera in 5 months - but did get an incredible hour with spoonbills in Sanibel while were in Florida. Will post some in Avian over the next couple of weeks.
Yes, I should have mentionned we notified a local bird-rescue place, and hope they followed up as they said they would. I imagine it would be quite tough to catch an adult sandhill perfectly capable of flying, without darting it with anesthesia, which would carry big risks in itself.

People always wonder why we have a 10 cent deposit on beverage cans here in Michigan. This says it all! Congratulations on the WP. :wavey: ..............Jim

Good example of this problem. I know from first hand experience how hard it is to catch a flighted bird in the wild. Hope the rescue folks were able to help. Thanks for sharing.
