Icicle Shrine

Like many people, I made my way up to the Apostle Islands seashore ice caves this year to make the hike out across frozen Lake Superior. It was a long 7 hour drive to my hotel after work Friday night. I got up early having heard the parking gets crazy and drove the last hour. I arrived at about 7 am and barely got a spot in the parking lot. By the time I left in mid afternoon cars were parked for miles down the road. Most of those people didn't go much past the first 1/2 mile of cave area.

This particular image is from a cave that was pointed out to me by a young'n standing near it. This was most of the way to the far end of the caves...where I think the caves were the best. This one was not really noticeable and I'd have missed it if not for his curiosity and then sharing. The opening was very small...I couldn't get my backpack in the opening which I had to belly crawl and wiggle through.

Somehow I squeezed in despite the massive amounts of layers and was treated to a stunning site. There was the opening above the wall I had squeezed through. You couldn't see the opening from outside because of the hanging icicles. The room itself was only about 6'x6' but fairly tall.

I spent a while in the cave enjoying it. I could have spent hours just sitting in there. I tried to find it again on my way back, but missed it.

I wish I had known it is allowable to head out there at night. I'd definitely do that next time I get the opportunity to head out there. I'll behave and not hope for that cold a winter just yet, though. ;)

I love the POV along with the lines in this winter scene, Jeff. Looks like a very cool place. This is being super picky and it might not have been possible, but I find myself wishing you had moved a little to the left so as to hide the overhanging rock face behind the icicles. either way, really nice.

Very nice POV for this and an interesting comp also. I wonder what this would look like as a B&W with more contrast and a blue tone to it. Just a thought. Very nice.

An interesting point of view, and it looks like it could be raining icicle. I like the idea of a b&w conversion.

Nice detail, and you handled the light well. Definitely a different image. I like it.

I'm curious about the b&w comments as this actually is converted to b&w in LR. Here's a small color version (missing some dodging in the corners) where you can see the red sandstone and the sediment drained into the icicles. I'll certainly play around with the suggestions.

@Ed: I think I could have moved slightly left. I definitely need to pay more attention to the backgrounds.

Thanks all!

I like the convergence of icicles that you've got here Jeff. I think the color version is better because of how the warmth in many of the icicles contrasts with the chilly sky and the icicles around the opening.

I like the color version much better, Jeff. A great find thanks to the youngster, and you took good advantage of it. A very unique setting and view.

Jeff,

I take back the black and white comments, since it was in black and white, lol. I really like the color version because it provides beautiful color tones and contrast.

Jeff, This is a very cool shot! I like both versions too. I was out there and totally enjoyed it. I had been there other years when there were a lot less people but still it was nice getting out there again. I went out at night the first day I got there and it was great.
