This long exposure in a single take is an old favourite from one of the most memorable shoots in my life. The colour balance has never sat perfectly with me over the years. I decided this week that perhaps the solution is a monochrome.

70 minute exposure

Really like the comp and the monochrome works great. 70 minutes? Film? Star trails look discontinuous? Digital? Hard to figure out and I guess it shouldn't matter. The layering and textures work great.

I like the layering and the contrast between the soft water, the textures in the rock and the linear star trails. I like the image and the mood it projects very much. I don't normally care much for star trails but in this case I think the image is much stronger because of them.

As a possible nit is there a line of white (very thin halo) between the mountain and the sky in the upper left corner?

I think the monochrome suits the image Kah Kit, wonderful rugged terrain and you've nailed the composition.

Cheers, Gary.

KK, seriously one of my favs from you. You excel at brooding scenes and this one fits right in the portfolio. It must have been pitch-ish dark for this 70min exposure. I don't recall other renditions of this scene but the monochrome is on point

A fine image, however you produced it. A little work on the edges makes it even finer.

Very moody and dramatic, KK. There's almost a selenium toning effect that I like. I agree about the halos, but this is a fine image.

Thanks for the comments. I'm using a new laptop for processing the 15" MacBook Pro and preparing web images can be hit and miss with regards to sharpening. There's perhaps a thin sharpening halo there however the broader lightening above the horizon is the glow of sunset which was captured at the start of the exposure. This was a 70 minute digital capture at ISO 100.

I like the fewer stars in the sky…as if shot when the moon were up and masking many of them. Lovely. Simple color tones keep this with a cool and crisp ‘feel’.

Really nice blue toned black and white which I think suits this shot admirably adding a pleasing mystery to it.

Kah Kit, Bruce King posted a thread in the Digital Imaging Forum asking about how long exposures affect battery life. Since he mentioned this image specifically, I thought you might be able to give him some ideas.
