Take a look at version 2 at the bluebird nest. Thanks for all the comments on my earlier image. I think I covered it all. This is the next frame.

Nikon D700 F8 1/160 ISO 1600 Nikon 200-400

Cropped off a lot of tree trunk from the right, some from the top and added a little room on the left. Toned down the green so as not to take away from the beauty of the birds. Does this work better ?

Thanks!!!!

Hi Andrew:

Not sure if I think this works better than the last. I'm not wild about the vertical split now with about 1/2 green negative space behind the bird. Of more concern is the bird isn't sharp. Definitely needs a round of sharpening.

I agree with Keith that the biggest issue is that the bird isn't sharp. But I think that is a focus problem and not a lack of sharpening.

Sweet image, Andrew. I like your composition a lot and the eye contact is great. The almost hidden beak of the nestling is really cool. My only nit is that the head of the adult seems a bit soft-might have been a touch of motion blur in the head at that shutter speed.

I go along with Dennis on this one. I realize that there is a lot of what Keith called negative space behind the bird, but I am not sure cropping in more of what is probably OOF trunk is an improvement. A difficult crop however you look at it, and I think this is as reasonable a compromise as any.
