Gallery: Weekly ChallengePosted September 15, 2014337 views6 comments
Growing up in Montreal, I'm not sure the word "rodeo" was even in my vocabulary. Having lived in Alberta for 25 years now, it's simply a part of the local culture.

This image is from the bull riding event at a nearby, small town rodeo. I was there with a co-worker whose child was competing in the Wild Pony Riding event.

1/640 sec at f/5.0, ISO 800, +1/3EV, 70-300mm lens at 166mm

p.s. Mark, I read this week's challenge as being anything that would fit in the POP gallery. If that's incorrect, please move this.... Thanks!

W:eek:W Karen,
This image has a very powerful first impression and gets even better the more I look at it,
everything about it is outstanding. Could you gives us some insight on your processing notes, the effect you managed is sweet.
Way  action shot, I can see this hanging in a Cowboy Bar next to the Corona sign with no problem what so ever.

Thanks so much Mike! I had wondered right after posting, whether or not the processing notes should have been added.

So, I started with "standard" adjustments using LR and Nik Color Efex. Then, felt it might look nice using a B&W or sepia conversion (decided to go with sepia for an old western feel) and finally took it one more step into Perfect Effects and tried using some of the various effects, settling on a slight grunge look this time.

At each step of the way, I work in layers, so that if the effect added is too strong, it can be mitigated by making the new layer a bit transparent (that is how some of the original color is peaking through the sepia).

A powerful and dramatic image, Karen! The sepia tones makes it look like an old photo but the mask on the cowboy tells you it's very current

Karen, this works fine for the challenge. It's a great action catch although it almost looks like the rider's head is still attached to the bull (which would not be good!) Going b&w with the sepia tone does a fine job of keeping attention on the action.

Even the thumbnail just pops off the page. This is exciting. The raised foot, rope flying, dirt flying, wide eyed beast. Great image. Really like the processing as well. Thanks for sharing!
