Owens Valley Boulder

Taken last October just below the bluffs along the Owens River. This boulder had obviously come down from the bluffs above at some unknown time in the past. Cold day with rain and snow flurries - invigorating! Cloned out some telephone poles in the background. D80, 28-70(3.5-4.5)at 48mm, 1/100, F11, ISO 320. I usually post in Avian, but spend a lot of time in this gallery, and would like to post more here. Would love comments regarding overall composition, light, contrast, saturation. Thanks for looking.

Striking comp Jim with the boulder echoing the shape and attitude of the mountains. I also like the complementary blue of the mountains against the yellow grass. Excellent detail and textures as well. No suggestions.

Jim, I have to say as soon as I saw this one I knew where it was at. It's a bit of an iconic item out there in the open along the Owens.
I would remove some of the blue here, just my personal taste of course......

Yep, I know that big old rhyolite boulder, too. Looks like the weather was pretty dramatic on Mount Tom, Basin Mountain and back toward the Thompson Ridge--I miss it!

I agree with Paul about pulling out some of blue, especially in the peaks. You might also consider cloning out the roads to the right of the boulder. You could try increasing the mid tone contrast just a bit.

Very nice image Jim and I agree with Paul and Preston's comments about the blue. I like how the rock mimics the mtns. in behind and the fore ground tones and colors. Nice job.

I like the focus on the boulder and how you've set it against the distant peaks with their complimentary shapes. This works well.

I like the image, particularly the larger photo. I have to wonder what a much closer POV, shot from a low angle would look like? Thank you for sharing.

I like this a lot, Jim. Looks like a giant toad and I like the in your face presentation. I think I would tone down the blue also, but a really nice image. :toast:

Lovely shot, and it is clear what the subject is! Very interesting big boulder in the midst of a gorgeous setting on a fall day. Very nice comp and colors.
