Sword-billed Hummingbird

An image from one of our previous Ecuador photo tours. It was nice to get this species feeding from a trumpet flower, it's natural food. This was taken on our 6 flash multi-flash setup, artificial background with the flower held by a plamp and injected with sugar water at Guango Lodge. It's full frame.

Canon 1D3 300F4 1/250 F18, iso 500, 580ex and 6 Nikon SB-26 flashes set to 1/16 power

Very cool ,Nate. Neat that you filled the frame so precisely. Do you use a higher than normal concentration of sugar in the water (normal being 4 parts water to 1 part sugar)? Excellent flash setup.

Thanks Dennis, I am using what is in the feeders at the lodges, I am assuming it would be a normal concentration.

It's nice to see a Sword-billed shot with this type of flower. Nice set up, Nate.

Hi Nate--Very cool image :toast: . The detail is quite amazing and one of the few shots that we will see where a bird's beak is used to link the flower to the body of the hummer for an ideal composition :toast: .......................Jim

Great set up and use of flash Nate. You know the flash set up is great when it doesn't look like any flash was used. Really loving the comp on this one. :toast:
