These are normally a pretty elusive species, but last September in Bayou Sauvage I had an unusual opportunity to have this Green Heron pose on a handrail at close range, and thought that it would work for the Weekly Challenge. Cropped to 75% of original, larger image included.

I've never gotten this close. Good shot! This proves what I have always felt—birds are just notional sometimes!

Beautiful shot love the green background and the detail in the feathers. The eye is really the focus of the photo, great job.

Bill, this bird both stands out wonderfully and fits in well with the gentle green background. The details in the head are terrific. I've stalked these a few times and they are indeed challenging to get close to. It looks to me like there's a bit of a blue cast to the darker areas of the bird, but that's a very minor nit on a lovely portrait.

Lovely portrait shot Bill. Great detail in the eye and feathers, plus a wonderfully complimentary BG. I like that the bill is oriented so you can barely see BG through the nostril too - that intrigues me. Works very well for this WC.
