Mom's Home!

Hi,

These Red Fox were photographed on a private ranch property in Wyoming early this summer. The kits were grown and always ran excitedly whenever Mom (or Dad) came to visit.

The light on this day was tough as the foxes were constantly moving in and out of the light and shadows from the trees. Shooting in Manual I was adjusting my settings a lot and had a lot of throwaways. I could've gone with a fast ss on this shot, but I was able to adjust the blown out whites later. I got a few keeper shots like this one :)

Canon EOS 5D MIII
Canon 500mm f/4L IS II USM

ISO 1250 | f/4.5 | 1/640s

Full frame, tripod set up

I adjusted the whites a little in the RAW conversion and bumped the orange saturation a bit, then desaturated the greens as they were a little bright. No other changes.

I am wondering if you have any other suggestions to help me improve this image?

Thanks, Ashleigh

Ashleigh, no really cogent suggestions to improve this picture. It is a sweet catch of a family moment. No capture like this is perfect; there are always some "could have, should have" moments. But I have no qualms in saying this is a pretty darn good image! It expresses perfectly the subject line story, and no one can ask more of it than that. Technically, I suppose it's a little crowded, and I could wish some of the obscuring shrubbery were out of the way. But the fact that it tells a story so powerfully, puts it way up toward the front, IMO. :toast:

Well done on this image Ashleigh,
It seems to have all come together for this composition and you have presented it nicely.
This is what we call the 'Money Shot', congratulations . . .

Ashleigh, I have no suggestions to improve this because there are none. You have captured the moment beautifully and told a story.

Great Job

Thank you everyone for your nice comments. I think I have a little more room in the original so I'll look at creating more room around the subjects.

Thank you again, Ashleigh

Great work on this Ashleigh, really nice comp showing some great behavior. The post processing you did works well the colors all look natural, I don't see anything I would change, well done!

Ashleigh, this is great as posted! I'm a sucker for these family behavior shots. I have no suggestions. Phil said it best, If anything, a little more room all around would be nice. Sweet shot!

Yes to adding some space if you have it...but I must say you did a great job of isolating and composing this action in the midst of what looks like lots of potentially interfering vegetation!

Great interaction and I just love that bushy tail !
Apart from some more room around, I do wish if I could see the eyes of at least one fox.

It's all been said. Great moment, well timed and framed (ditto on it needing a hint more space left and right though).
Good job on using the foliage as "Frame" too...

Awesome image, Ashleigh! I love this one. The interaction between the three foxes is great. You certainly pulled it off considering the lighting and their movements that you mentioned!
