Musk & Scent

Musk & Scent are being exuded by this young female grizzly bear as she is coming into estrus and being pursued by a large male bear.Taken in Northern British Columbia Canada during springtime where she has recently emerged from her winter dormancy time. She is heading to the estuary water where she can swim to safety and climb the granite walls of the shoreline, where she could rest for awhile . Being very hungry , the succulent sedge grass looks enticing & full of much needed protein . Hand held from a floating zodiac boat as it drifts with the tide. Morning time, when the mist is low and hanging just above the waters surface, as seen in the background.

Taken @ 70mm VR on normal from floating Zodiac, F5.6, 1/200, ISO 200

Hand held, -.67 Meter compensation

Hi, Bill! This is an impressive young grizzly and I think you portrayed her beautifully. The pose and timing is very cool, her head turn with complementive catchlight is excellent, and your comp is pretty much perfect.

My only nit, and it's a significant one for me, is there is a very processed look to this, specifically in the background. It has somewhat of an HDR effect on the background forest, or evidence of the shadows really heavily opened up, to the point where the trees on the right have taken on a very artificial look to my eyes.

Interestingly, the above nit results in an image that is outstanding on the bottom half, and for me, very unnatural on the top half!

I'm not sure what you've done by way of adjustments, but I personally think the image is worth revisiting. If you do, and if you have it in the original frame, a tiny bit of space above the tops of the trees on the right would be a very simple improvement as well.

Neat pose and behavior. I like the paw and reflective eye. To me, the overall image feels unnaturally bright. I agree you could revisit post processing and make this stronger.
