Hidden Cascade

Recent summer-heat in N-West has accelerated the melt-rate of a dense snow pack. This long snow cave was quickly melting. My friend Frank and I steered clear of the lower elevation openings due to fear of collapse and climbed higher where the depth of snow was thicker.

A high flow creek was an added bonus to the snow cave composition.

This is two exposures blended, one for the roof and a much longer exposure for the cascade.

Nikon 14-24mm at 14 and Nikon D800e

The verdict on Mt Rainier wildflowers is still out… I am a bit of a skeptic…been to Sunrise and other spots the past 2 weeks. I did not see much except for an unusual abundant amt of bear-grass, tall and plentiful.

Comments welcome.

Great blend. It is the contrast of the motion and stillness of the roof that draws me in.

I just love the snow cave you found. Quite a bit of magenta, not sure of the lighting to create that. Not sure if possible, but the falls seem too tight and cut off on the left, with an empty area of rock on the right. A little unbalanced for me, but these tight places must be a challenge to compose.

What a beauty!! Gorgeous capture, and I especially enjoy the capture of the dripping water.

Ken - I can see why you went with a vertical - the ceiling is fantastic. The second image showcases the falls more than the interesting snow. One possible solution might be/have been to stitch 2 horizontals to get the both of both worlds. What a fantastic scene :toast:

A striking and enjoyable image. As a newcomer to NPN, I'm learning that nature photography doesn't always portray nature as our eyes see it. There are so many long-exposure photos of flowing water and water falls that smear out the water detail -- a pleasing effect, but is the water detail of no interest?

Ken, I like the vertical composition, but agree with Harry about the left side of the small cascade being cut off. Did you try two horizontal frames to stitch then vertically?

Amazing! I couldn't figure out what I was looking at till I read your description. Living in a subtropical zone, I didn;t even know such things existed. I'm guessing that the vertical lines are actually drips from the ceiling of the snow cave. Amazing.
