Orange Fringed Orchid

The orange fringed orchid has been on my list of must-see plants for a long time. This morning I set off on a 2 hour drive to find this rarity. I found close to 20 plants and this one was the most photogenic for the entire flower flower spike. 15 to 20 mph winds and bright lighting added to the challenge. I set my meter and waited for a cloud to block the sun. K5 IIs, 300mm f4 DA* (1/125 sec at f7.1, ISO 100), CS5 Levels and Topaz Detail for sharpening...........Jim

Not a big fan of centered, single flower portraits, but this one definitely works, Jim. Eye-catcing flower against a nice, contrasting bg. I like the bit of texture in the bg. :toast:

I have no problem with "centered" as pretty as this. Besides, the problem with centered (boring) is more with a weak subject than a strong one, which this is. It commands the frame and commands the eye. Good work, Jim! :toast:

Congrads on this outstanding image. It is a pleasure to see a wildflower in this gallery of mostly garden flowers. I especially like the sharply defined fringing on the orchid lips, and the way their lighter color makes them stand out. Yes, the wind is a challenge. Around here, I try to get out to the photo site at dawn, and when there is enough light I typically have only an hour or two before the wind comes up. I've not posted many of my wildflower photos yet, but plan to do so in the future when I'll welcome your comments. Ron
