Hoverfly

I took this photo on 17June2012. Each year about that date, groups of these flies hover in black spruce and tamarack wooded fen vegetation. The challenge is to catch them in a sunbeam, facing you, and hovering long enough in one spot to have time to focus and snap the shutter. This one posed for me at the Orono Bog Boardwalk in Bangor, Maine, USA. The photo is severely cropped.
Canon EOS 7D
Canon EF300mm f/2.8L IS USM +1.4x at minimum focusing distance (~2.5m)
1/250 sec; f/10; ISO 1000
Shutter priority; Evaluative metering

Wow. :jump: I've seen some great hoverfly (and bee) in flight captures, but none with this magnification and detail. :toast:

Thats a outstanding image Ronald. The larger version is a must see. Beautiful details in the face and the back light creating the rainbow colors is awesome.
