Another photo from the Sheep Rock Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds in Eastern Oregon.
This area of very small towns and cattle ranches is rarely visited by most. It is very unique...

14mm (Rokinon lens), f11, 1/50 handheld, D800

I like the curves in the comp Dan and the complementary blues and yellows are very eye catching. I like the image as posted - no suggestions.

I'm really digging this image. This is the sort of shot that doesn't have a huge impact at first, but the longer I view it (especially the larger version) the more I see in it. To me at least, that's a very good thing. There are some photos that have a huge instant shock value, but then seem empty as you continue to view them. The light here is fantastic, and you handled the shadows and highlights very well. I like the way the lava(?) rocks in the foreground swirl into the scene toward the left, and all the colors and textures go well with each other. Well done, and no nits from me.

Dan. I like this shot quite a lot. The foreground rocks and their arrangement and the grasses really make this for me. I am curious why you would hand hold this shot @ 1/50s. I am not at all comfortable hand-holding anything in this SS range. My thought is why risk an opportunity by not being as solid as I can be. Just curious

Gary,
Although I think 1/50 is probably borderline, but I can easily hold a small lens steady at this speed.
I handhold big lenses for bird and wildlife so 14mm landscape lens are easy I think.
Maybe I am a bit lazy, but I am hiking most of the time when taking landscapes and I just don't feel like carrying and setting up a tripod.
I also think handholding gives the freedom to easily get better comps a lot of the time.
I obviously use tripods for water and night photos, but in decent light, I enjoy the freedom of just moving and shooting.

Dan, This is a very cool and interesting looking place. I like your comp with the sweeping line in the lower part and the colors are great. Your large version looks especially nice and has wonderful textures in it. Very nice!

This looks like an interesting area for photography. The color combinations look very appealing. Also your composition works very welland I do not mind the - relatively - harsh lightning. The light sculuptures the rock formation nicely.

Very interesting rock forms indeed Dan, I am liking all the differing colour in this too.

Dan, this has that same look and feel as your previous post from this general area. A very natural setting with excellent lighting and overall exposure. I always enjoy shots with strong geological formations in them, similar to this one here.

This is terrific. I'm really liking what that lens can do - there is so much detail to linger over. Beautiful colors and lighting as well.

I sure do like the sweep of the foreground and that low ledge. Then the erosion formations are shown off so nicely by the early (late) light. Well done, Dan.

I've looked at this a few times now, and it grown on me. The color and contrast look just fine to me.

Nicely done, Dan.

Very pretty. I'm viewing this on an uncalibrated monitor so I'm unsure about what the colors should look like accurately - looks a little greenish to me, but I'm sure that's probably just my monitor. Your composition is excellent and the scene itself is beautiful - I would really love to be in the midst of this!

Very nice, Dan. Great combination of elements, lines, and colors with sharp processing. I agree with Ben that there's a lot to enjoy here beyond the first glance.

I was guessing Utah when I saw the shot, then noticed the grass on the hill in the background left.

Nice job Dan; I really need to get out and shoot this area.
