There are numerous large, flat dry salt pans througtout S Africa.
The pans were originally lakes, but over time the earth’s climate forced the rivers that once fed the lakes to change course and flow into the Atlantic Ocean. During the rainy season, a small amount of rain may accumulate in the pan, but it is so salty that few animals can tolerate the water.
With the severe drought in Africa, no rain at all accumulates.
Animals still congregate near the pans and use them as salt licks.

The image shows the vastness of the dry areas and the vegetation matches this with the lack of color. I think the fact that it's such a large area and virtually no animals can be seen also conveys how extreme an environment this is.
