Crazy Eyes

A moment from my March trip to the Chobe river in Botswana. This young bull was enjoying a good frolick in the water, and came out head swishing and eyes all crazy.

Though this was captured from the photographic boat, I was sitting on the floor with my lens resting over the side (as opposed to the comfy swivel chairs with gimbal heads). In hindsight I should have gone to f8 for more DOF, but I'm happy with the sequence I got.

Nikkor 500mm f4 VR-II
f5.6 | 1/1600 SS | ISO-1100

Full frame except for slight crop due to rotation (to get water level in front of ele level) - boat was bobbing

That's a great expression Morkel, the eyes don't seem to show up this well in most of the elephant photos I have seen. Usually cropping off part of the body messes with the composition but in this case it works very well in focusing our attention on the head. Really like this low angle btw.

I think you got the right amount of DoF to isolate the expression and those great ears. The title is certainly appropriate!

Crazy for sure! Cool image Morkel, and a great example the unique perspective offered by being in a boat...and the benefit of getting as low as possible.

Perfect title Morkel...crazy eyes to say the least! Absolutely love this image. The action is awesome. I think your DOF is fine personally because it makes me really zero in on those eyes.
