Proxy Falls

I spent an entire day clambering all over Proxy Falls, there are at least 4 other falls further above Proxy but none seemed to match Proxy for its beauty. I love the tessellated rock. I shot this late afternoon when the sun was coming through the trees and passing through the water spray. I didn't think much of it but it went down quite well amongst my friends.

My one thought is that people may not realise it's a waterfall. Especially in this day and age when we're saturated by photographs and most people only take a quick look. Perhaps it would be more evident if it were printed.

I agree with your friends; the light is quite nice. I might prefer a little more definition in the water.

Real Sweet, Andrew. I love the misty mood and the light is gorgeous. The brighter yellows on the moss look a tad over-saturated , but it's a matter of personal choice.

Nice, dreamy image. Well done!

Maybe some people not familiar with the PNW might not realize it's a waterfall Andrew, but I think it's pretty apparent. In any case, you caught this with epic light! I wish this were mine! Awesome image! :toast:

Great feedback, I love the constructive criticism from this site. Much better than the pointless 'nice pic' or 'nice work' from other sites. I may try it again in the coming days to see if I can get more definition in the water.

Love the light. I find the URC slightly distracting as it's only one portion of one tree. Do you have any wider views with more trees (context), or other views that showcase the light without trees at all?

Dreamy light and a nice different take on Proxy.
I think it is too yellow, your prerogative, but Proxy falls is about the greenest place in the Cascades.

It is but I don't recall toning down the green and intentionally yellowing it. I will look further at the original and I may well re-shoot this later this week.

FWIW, I think the processing works pretty well. There is a yellow cast, but the moss is also in direct sunlight.

I really like this image, but wonder if a slightly wider perspective might also work well. Could provide an interesting sense of place.

Great image, and I like your processing.

nice one - dreamy is the right word. i wonder whether cropping off the right would add or not? it might be interesting to try it?

I'm OK with the warm colour balance. A beautiful shot. Personally prefer a crop of the right as those trees on the edge are quite distracting to me.

I have one picture where the tree is more prominent, I'll process that one and may return soon.

Amazing light and colors. The softness created by the long exposure balances nicely with the rays on the right side. Great image.

Hmm, for me it's pretty obvious that this is a waterfall. And an excellent picture it is as well, great job!

Beautiful rendition of these falls - especially like the sweep of the mossy rock face. If you haven't tried, boost the clarity slider during the RAW process, and you might get better renditions of the water. The look may be too harsh, but worth a try. :toast:

Hi Andrew, This one works well as is to my eye. Warmer tones makes a lot more sense with late afternoon sun vs a cooler white balance. Our eyes are trained to look for the deep greens of all the waterfall images these days. I admire the control of highlights here not an easy blend. Lastly, I get the comment about the trees in the URC, however I can live with it if that vertical natural vignette stays. My only critique would be to lighten the opacity of your watermark, it really stands out, in fact, Its what my eye sees first. Maybe that's on purpose, however your stuff is top notch, anyone viewing your images typically has no problem searching out the artist.
