May 26, 2014 San Diego, California

While photographing Peregrine Falcons on the cliffs above the sea in this location with NPN Members, Charlie Van Tassel and Tjie Poo, late in the day we observed a fellow with a capsized kayak. We watched him try to get back into it without success for 15 to 20 minutes. It became obvious that he was tiring, had no life jacket and had lost his paddle. We called 911 who patched us into San Diego Lifeguards. After giving the location, we watched the guards show up on this Ski Doo and rescue this fellow. We photographed the rescue from the cliff with 600mm lenses.

It's stupid to go out without a life jacket. This looks like the sit on top type of kayak, which are generally the easiest to get back on. If you practice, anyway.

The kayak was full of water and the guy didn't know how to get it out. Every time he sat on it the kayak would just sink. Good job, Patrick. :toast:
