Bosque Sandhill Cranes

December 2, 2014 at Bosque del Apache, New Mexico in Keith Bauer's workshop, we captured images of Sandhill Cranes flying to roost for the night. The clear air helped us to capture vibrant images.

Nikon D4 600mm ISO500 1/1250 f/8 White Balance Auto Processed in Lightroom, CS6 and NIK.

The orange glow on this is great. The silhouettes look great. Really nice image. Anything I'd change would just be experimental and different, not necessarily better. Things I'd try: A little more of the dark mountains in the image, a longer crop, maybe 3:2 ratio. Just my thoughts.

In any case, very nice.

The sharpness on the cranes is great, Patrick, and the color sure makes a warm and inviting background. I like this very much as posted, but would be curious about how a version without the mountains "feels".

Alan LaFaver suggested a different crop. Here it is.

What a beautiful but simple image! I really like the orange sky and the clear silhouettes of the flying birds. Nice comp as is but I like you repost comp too. Great entry for this challenge, Patrick.
