Columbine

Every year I seem to make another stab at this wildflower. I took a stack, but it was starting to get slightly breezy-I haven't tried processing it yet, but I had enough light, so I also tried stopping down. This was the aperture that worked best for my taste.

5Diii, 180mm f3.5 macro, tripod. f29, 1/20, iso 640, -2/3 stop compensation, aperture priority. This is a slight crop to rebalance the image a bit. Taken yesterday morning at a local nature preserve.

Comments and criticisms are most welcome.

Thanks for looking,

This is handled very even handed…nicely framed, details are firm and b/g soft (DOF), and light / colors are sumptuous. No nits.

Dennis - Very nice - techs on the dot --> the branch and the flower are all managed nicely in the focal plane, and so is the frontal DOF to accommodate the petal coming towards the viewer.

I am in two minds with respect to the cobweb strand. I don't see it adding to the shot but not a deal breaker I suppose.

Dennis: DOF looks pretty good to me although I'm surprised it took f29 to get this all sharp. Good that the BG, which is perfect for my tastes BTW, stayed pleasingly OOF. I especially like the lighting here and your exposure. I like the webs and think they are a plus. Superbly crafted image.>=))>

Well done, Dennis. A radically shaped flower in perfect focus. I too like the spider web. I have very seldom taken a floral picture without a strand of web. Definitely on the pro side. :toast:

Dennis, this is beautiful. The only thing that's throwing me off is the angle of the flotsam and jetsam hanging from the plant, and that might be due to the breezy conditions you mentioned.

Best,
Carol

Strong comp Dennis and the black bg works very well with the flower. Nice light as well. No suggestions. I like this very much as posted.

Great sharpness to this Dennis, and good control of the background.
