Statuary
by Philip Hodgkins
There are 4 cemeteries in Savannah where statuary decorations are common, indicative of an era where people took pride in deceased relatives, their standing in the community and their Christian qualities. Nowadays, cemeteries are sterile plaques, plastic flowers, with only name, birth and death dates. There is very little differentiation from one grave to the next.
Some of these statues are quite fine works of art in themselves, of angels, Mary, Jesus and even the people themselves. People would take pride in the appearance of their grave sites. Going to the cemetery was a family affair, even a social affair.
This was one of the newer statues in Greenwich Cemetery, well detailed and well kept.
