White Rhino Calf

Probably the youngest calf I've had a chance to photograph, it was estimated at around five months old. This family was hiding in the shade of a tree as the morning started heating up, but the calf would occasionally peek out into the sun.

I opted for the monochrome conversion this time because I liked the way it brought out the texture of the mother's skin.

Canon 500mm f/4 IS

This is a wonderful comp Max, the size difference is emphasized by the mother's head entering the frame like this. The black and white conversion works very well to simplify the photo to what matters most here, the textures and juxtaposition of mother and calf. The eye contract of the youngster is very impressive, icing on the cake for a great shot! :toast:

Amazing to see such a small cute creature in comparison with the much larger and so powerful mother. This is an excellent story teller in one image, Max. I too like the monochrome treatment overall, and as pointed out, the effect on the skin of the mother. Just seeing her skin up close like this is another story in itself. Some war scars and just some old age facing a tough world out there. Excellent portraiture.

I like to position of the baby relative to the mother and the B&W rendition on this. Top marks. :toast:

The composition works very well! I like the placement of the mother's eye near the edge of the frame...unusual and effective. The shapes make this shot. It looks like in this version there is a slight halo around mom's face, which may not show in a full rendering and is an easy fix. B&W works for me.

A lovely image, timely in cause and I like the subtle conversion you did too.
