First Camas

by Dennis Plank

Gallery: FloraPosted April 9, 2014108 views13 comments
I was out on our local prairie for a weekly workday yesterday and spotted the first of the Camas blooming this year. I couldn't resist taking a few shots. The woodland flowers are starting to bloom nicely and I hope to get out tomorrow for those.

7D, 300mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC + 34mm of extension (don't know why I didn't take the TC off, but I'm glad I didn't. I did later and I found I prefer the bokeh with it on). f5.6, 1/640, iso 500, Av mode, no compensation. Processed in LR5 & CS6. Cropped to a 4x5 aspect ratio from a vertical original plus a touch more to even the sides. Taken April 8th at 8:43 am under cloudy skies.

Your comments and criticisms are most appreciated.

Thanks for looking,

Just the right choice of comp and dof for me, Dennis. Expertly captured on an exceptionally beautiful bg.

Dennis

This is a stunning image. The flower is tack sharp and the bg bokeh nicely complement the blue and green. Well done :toast:

I love the shape and cool "blue-with-a-hint-of purple" color of the blooms and that streaky, mysterious BG! :toast:

I really like the separation between BG and subject. Great portrait.

Very nicely done, Dennis. The vertical arrangement and hues of the BG against the blooms really sets this off.

Great sharpness Dennis. The centered comp works really well here. I like the feeling of movement in the BG. Excellent color throughout too!

Perfect blooms. The grays in the bloom are nicely complimented by the background. Clean shot! Very well done!

The details and color in the flower here are outstanding, Dennis. The background is also nice because it creates a sense of vertical movement.
