This is one of 10 Common Loons found this past weekend on a local lake. Finally able to get a good shot with good lighting. Made a few minor adjustments to the contrast and crop.

Canon 7D
Sigma 150-500mm
1/500 @ F8 handheld
ISO 400

Nice capture of this good looking guy (gal). I would crop off some of the top to eliminate the brown band. It draws my eye away from the loon.. Thanks for sharing.

Detail and exposure look pretty good in the larger image, Jason. The green coloration in the lower neck band comes through nicely. I'm not sure about the vertical crop for this one. There's a lot of empty space, even though the water is nice. The little band of shore on the top doesn't add anything for my taste. Nice eye contact.

Interesting composition that some will like, others not so much. I find myself in the not so much group. It feels cramped, especially on the left with not much interest in the negative space at the top. Negative space can add a lot to some images, but for me on this one it doesn't. As noted, the brown band at the top is eye catcher pulling the viewer away from the subject. I'd definitely crop to remove that.

Good details, colors, and exposure Jason, like the drop of water at the base of the beak too.
If you're going with the vertical comp, I'd probably crop to 8x10 eliminating the top.
Well done:wavey:

Nice look at this Loon Jason. Nice job capturing the beautiful colors in the Loon and that nice blue water. The vertical comp works OK for me, but I would eliminate the dark band from the top. It really draws your eyes away from the main subject.
