Rufous Hummingbird

I had another session with our backyard hummingbirds this past Wednesday evening. We had some pretty sweet late light that really brought the gorgets of the males to life and even torched off the subtler feathers on the top of the head and the wing. I'll probably post a few of these.

1Div, 500mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, Jobu gimbal on RRS legs. f8, 1/500, iso 1000, Av mode, -2/3 stop compensation. Processed in LR5 & CS6. Cropped from the sides and just a touch off the top and bottom. Fina;l size 7.6MP of the original 16. I touched up the iron hook a bit to remove some highlights. Normally the hook holds a hummingbird feeder but we'd moved it to a more sheltered location nearby to keep the wind from blowing it around. This male was trying to defend the feeder from at least four females and another male, so he was also resting while he had a chance. This was one of (and the closest I could get) of his favorite perches.

Your comments and criticisms are always appreciated.

Thanks for looking,

Luscious colours throughout Dennis tops off this sweet capture. I like the perch, for a man-made perch it has a nice organic feel thanks to the rusted patina and gentle curved shape. They don't come to any of the feeders in my yard in the summer. This one has me all pumped to try and locate some elsewhere, when they return up north.

The light is just wonderful Dennis - also a very nice perch that matches the bird extremely well, at least in my opinion  ... The bird has some dreamy look... Like it all way round :toast: , hans

Beautiful colors in this Rufous Dennis. You had some sweet light here. I would prefer a more natural perch, but the rusty metal and unique shape of this one works really well. Very nice image!

I love the perch on this one Dennis (I might be in the minority just because it isn't natural). The curling at the bottom really makes this one unique. Very nice techs on this also. This isn't so much a nit, as just a wish. I don't know how may frames you have of this, but do you have one with a head turn looking to the right of the frame? If so, I think it would make this even better.
