Building a nest

This mourning dove was hard at work building a nest. She would fly to the ground nearby the nest tree and start picking through twigs, stems etc. on the ground. She would pick something up then drop it back on the ground then she would pick something else up then drop it back to the ground. She would do this every time until she found a stem or twig that met her exacting standard then she would fly back to the tree and add it to the nest. Sometimes she would take a large twig or stick and sometimes she took a single blade of grass. Of course I have no idea why she was so picky about what to use for the nest but it was fun watching her at work and I imagine she knew what she was doing. Here she is returning to the nest with a small blade of grass. I shot this photo at White Rock lake in Dallas.

D300s with 200-400/4 and TC 14 HH

Nice job of getting this dove in flight Robert. There is a tiny dust spot to the left of the head buy an inch or so.

Neat! I don't recall ever seeing a flight shot like this of a Mourning Dove.

Nice flight shot, Robert and the story that goes with it is fascinating-especially since dove nests are usually rather shoddy affairs. I like the excellent eye contact.

Hi, I have never had an opportunity to get an in-flight mourning dove. You captured the neck iridescence and blue eye-ring and a small twig too. These birds are minimalists regarding nest construction and the nest building behaviors are well documented in your narrative and photo. :toast: ............Jim

Very nice image. I also have never seen this. Looks like a lot of work for tiny piece of grass.

Wonderful flight shot of the dove. I see them all the time and kind of dismiss them but they certainly would make for a nice bird to practice flight shots on since they are always around, way to go.

Excellent capture. Nice detail and wing position. The bit of grass adds a lot to the nature story. :toast:

Robert,
Nice glint in the eye. Sweet job of getting her with this little tiny piece of grass. The story was great. She must have know what she needed on each trip back and forth. Like weaving a basket with just the right equipment. Love the gold on the neck in the larger image. Great shot!

Very nice Robert, one of the best Mourning Dove in-flights I've ever seen.
Wish it was mine :toast:
