‘Flashy’
Florida Rhesus Monkey, Mark Seaver and I had a difficult time with both encounters both days with the monkeys on the Silver River. The first day was a heavy overcast and the second had bright sunlight casting heavy shadows thru the forest canopy mixed with sunny hot spots. I pulled out the trusty flash to get some fill light and help even out the situation. This is one of the results. Full frame, HH from boat.

MIke, fine look at this monkey. The pose is good and your flash really separates her from the background well while controlling the brightness of the tree trunks. I recognize that over hanging branch and leaves from some of my shots.

Mike, nice sharpness and separation here. The flash exposure is good, but with the flash as the primary lighting it looks flashed. I noticed that you had iso 100 and a minus 1 comp on with the exp comp to get the 1/250th. The 7D should be able to easily handle iso400 if not 800. Any though to going to iso 400 (+2 stops) dropping the exp comp and still being able to back off on the flash to more of a fill? More curious than anything. Are these guys escapees? I didn't think we had a native monkey population in FL.

Hi Mike,

Technically it looks like you nailed this one pretty well. I do share Rick's view that the appearance of the image is that it's almost fully illuminated with flash (as opposed to a subtle fill). I am sure some like the look, but personally I find most images with the primary lighting coming from flash to be on the "too artificial" side for my liking.

From a compositional perspective I like the positioning of the monkey in the frame. The brightness of the tree the monkey is on makes it a pretty heavy element in the frame and if this shot were mine I'd probably tone it down somewhat in brightness.

Cheers - thanks for sharing this one...
