A kiskadee from Costa Rica a couple years back. The purple are just OOF flowers in the background.

50D, 500mm f/4 with 1.4x
ISO 800
Fill flash @ -2 1/3

Noise Reduction applied to background

Larger version supplied.

Thanks for taking a look

Nice shot . Colors on this guy are interesting to me. Don't seem to match. Looks like he's a 3 way mix of some sort.....

Anyway, only thing negative that popped in my head was, wish the crop wasn't so close. Don't know why, weird, that's just what popped in there.

Everything looks perfect on all other aspects to me.

How far away was he? Are you using a better beamer for fill flash w/ such a long focal length?

No. This was with my Canon 580 EX flash. With fill flash there is no need for a better beamer (which I don't like anyway). That flash has a guide number of 58 and when you are shooting at -2 1/3 it has a very long reach, especially for the purpose of just a touch of fill.

Nice image, Keith. A good job on the noise reduction. If I recall the 50D was pretty noisy at iso 800. For my taste, I'd remove the pinpoint catchlight from the flash. Other than that, the pose and composition are great and I like the purple in the bg.

A fine looking bird and a nice clean shot with good colors and detail. I like the tight crop.

Nice flash-photo, well-exposed. Always tricky, but you surely master this ! Cheers, Hans

Sweet portrait of this beauty Keith. Excellent detail, perfect use of fill flash, I really like the saturated feel of the background. Just a personal nit, but I wish for a different perch, just not much for cut branches.
