Red lowland bobcat, captured along the Madison River early this Feb in Yellowstone NP. This beautiful cat let us photograph him for over an hour with nary a care

Canon 5D3. 400 mm f/5.6. ISO 500. f/8. 1/250 sec. Tripod. Cropped down by about 60% for a vertical comp.

See LARGER VERSION for best detail! Thanks for looking! C&C, as always, appreciated. :wavey:

Glad you posted this Bobcat photo, Doug. I photographed the same cat (I assume) in later February (21st). I like the color on the rock, the eyes, and the dusting of snow on the head. My first reaction though, is I wish for a bit more space on the right. It just seems a little tight on that side to me. Just my eye, I guess. Congrats on a great photo.

Beautiful take of this wonderful and healthy looking cat, Doug. Glad to hear he was such a good fella and remained on set for as long as he did......
Edit: spacing on the right is easy these days with CA and creative cloning as I'm sure your aware of. I use all the time on sky and FG areas that were too tight on my landscapes.

Wow, I can just imagine your excitement taking this. Such a dignified pose with a full look that you don't often get. The size of those paws!! Love the matching colors of the fur and the rock, with snow conveying the season. A real winner.

Hello Doug

Excellent Capture of an elusive nocturnal guy! He certainly was not threatened by your presence if he posed for that long! Too bad he did not offer up his tufted ear tips:( The paws are impressive with their snow shoe size, and that very powerful looking hind leg. .
I find the large rock somewhat overpowering as presented, and feel if you had more room to the right , to be included would balance him better.

Really like this image! Thanks for sharing

Bill

What an awesome opportunity. I'm constantly amazed at the number of wonderful wildlife photos that are mined out of Yellowstone, such an important park!!! This is a real beauty Doug, the setting is stunning and so appropriate for the bobcat. I will add my voice to those wanting a little more room, not much, on the right - especially since this has been cropped to a vertical.

OK, I'm officially jealous. Super capture of an often elusive subject. I'll agree with the others for adding back a little on the right. :toast:

Great shot of one of my favorite animals. It all works for me. I think the crop is fine. The head and eyes are right at the "rule of thirds" intersection at the top right. I would leave it as it is. I have been fortunate enough to photograph bobcats on four different occasions but the longest "session" I had was about 45 secs and definitely no snow.

Hi Doug,

Guess I better enter the "room on the right?" fray! Personally, I like the crop/framing exactly as is. To me this image conveys a feeling of the bobcat being "wedged" into a tight space and further that nature isn't always super-comfortable (and with the snow that the cat isn't 100% happy with his current situation). What's that saying..."stuck between a rock and a cold place?"

Real nice shot Doug - no nits at all from me. Love the snow on top of the head. Excellent example of wildlife photography done right!

Cheers...

Brad

Beautiful cat and well exposed! This is fine as posted, but I wonder about rotation if you have extra, because log, rock and cat all seem to be leaning right. Of course, that might have been true vertical, but I would experiment...

Congrats on getting time with this beautiful cat, I tried for two days and only managed a fleeting glimpse. Love the alert pose you captured here Doug. Excellent details. The only nit I have, has been mentioned.

Sweet One!!!

Doug,
What a great photo.
I am interested as to whether you have more room on the right as I feel this would produce a better balance, another alternative would be to crop on left and perhaps from the top as this would give the illusion of greater space on the right :toast: :toast:

Thanks everyone. The crop on the right was partially influenced by some distracting branches in that area, which would require some moderately tricky cloning, but doable. Maybe I'll give it a try, but, frankly, I kind of like this crop as is.
