Bay-headed Tanager

Here's another shot from our Trinidad and Tobago trip. This was taken from the veranda at Asa Wright Nature Center in Trinidad. Some tanager species were feeding from a fruiting tree there. Behind the tree is a bluish building, so the crop chosen was to minimize that while keeping enough detail in the bird (I didn't want to crop anymore than I already have).

Canon 5D3 500F4 1.4x 1/160 F7.1, iso 1000, 580ex fill flash at -2.0, Gitzo tripod with Wimberley head.

You find the coolest birds. That green is almost fluorescent. The background is a bit busy, but the bird more than makes up for it. Well done.

Super shot Nate. The fill flash work is excellent. You barely see the difference in the lighting levels. I agree with Jerry that you seem to find the coolest birds. The colors in this one are stunning. You can barely see the blue building. I'm not sure I would have realized that it was a structure if you hadn't said anything. :toast:

Excellent details even with the crop, love this birds striking colors Nate.
Great pose/POV with berry in beak, nice job composing this to minimize the 'bluish' building as well :toast:

The bird is amazing. We have it in Brazil, but I never had the chance to see one.
Nice shot!

A cool looking bird, Nate, and I like the berry and pose. It may be the natural look of the plumage, but the bird has an oversharpened look to my eye.

I wouldn't have noticed the blue building, either. The bird is amazing - green with a gorgeous chestnut head. Love that he's squishing the berry a bit - great timing.

I personally like shots where the bird is in habitat, and the habitat of the berry bush here is great; I feel it adds to the shot, as opposed to detracting from it with its elements that some might consider "busy." I would much prefer this shot to the bird on a stick with the berry in his mouth, for example.

If it were mine, I would darken the LH side of the large leaf on the left. The fact that it's bright draws my eyes from the bird... although he's so handsome and busy getting a berry, my eyes go right back to him.

Another super cool bird you have here Nate, the tanager family is so amazing. I like the clean view of the bird while at the same time getting a great feel for its habitat. Perfect use of flash.

The colors on this bird are very striking and I like the berry in the beak. I also like the setting of the berries and the leaves very much.

Nate,
I didn't notice the blue building till you mentioned it. That bird brings so much attention to itself that I don't many would even see that building. Does not detract at all in my opinion. What a spectacular looking bird Nate. Never seen anything like it. The surroundings give it quite a jungle feel. There is a comment about the feathers looking over sharpened. It is also possible that the iridescent feathers could be giving it a look like it is over sharpened because I find the head feather do not look over sharpened at all. Congrats on this image Nate. Would love to have something like this for my collection. :toast: :toast:
